The objective of sea observations is to know the distribution of oceanography
parameters. These parameters can describe water condition, for example upwelling
process, water mass circulation, and other phenomenas. One of the important
oceanography parameter is the sea surface temperature. The sea surface temperature
data can be measured directly or be estimated by using NOAA/AVHRR(National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration/Advanced Very High Resolution
Radiometer) satellite. This paper aim is to discuss the utilization of satellite
NOAA/AVHRR data to estimate the sea surface temperature on Macassar Strait.
The results show that the sea surface temperature on Macassar Strait vary
between 27.5°C-31.0°C. This temperature is 1°C higher than in situ data
measurement. In middle of Macassar Strait the thermal front can be seen. Mean while
the upwelling is not seen on image of NOAA/AVHRR data.
