Observasi Lama Siklus Dan Periode Estrus pada kuda (Equus caballus) di detasemen kavaleri berkuda (Denkavkud) Parongpong Lembang-Jawa Barat

Abstract

The success of reproductive activity in horses is closely related to the estrous cycle and estrus period. This study reports the estrous cycle, estrus period as well as estrus behavior in the Detasemen Kavaleri Berkuda with the environmental temperature range between 23 to 27oC (day) and 17 to 20oC (night). The length of the estrous cycle was 19.21±3.67 days, with estrus itself lasting 4.95±0.5 days. The behavior arising during estrus was decreasing appetite, squealing with stallion, occasional urinating and aversion of the vulvae labia (winking), secreting of white to cream mucus at the vulva, mare do not refusing when approached by stallion or come to the stallion and squatting, went to stud by itself and give the back part or its rump. The vulva in estrus mare appear to be larger than non estrus mare, the vulva looks wet and dried mucus left on a part of the vulva. Other characteristic were the high frequent of urination during in the stable that makes the cage looks wetter than non estrus mare and estrus mare always raising the tail in a relatively long time.
