      Abstract
The objective of this experiment was to evaluate and characterize horticultural traits of introduced and PKBT’s melon hybrids and to identify the potential PKBT’s hybrids compare to those of the commercial introduced hybrids. The evaluated hybrid varieties consist of introduction hybrids are Ten Me, Angel, Honey Globe, New Charm, New Century and Apollo and PKBT’s melon are H150 and H7. The experiment was conducted at KP IPB Tajur 2 from September to November 2006 using Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The genotype variability was analyzed using analysis of variance method. The result showed that there are significant differences for all characters, except on days of male flowering dan days of hermaphrodite flowering. The experiment also shows a negative correlation between fruit length character and Total Solutable Solid (TSS) and a positive correlation between stem diameter character and TSS. H150 is a PKBT’s Cantaloupe melon hybrid that had a good vegetative growth, orange flesh, high TSS (10.02%Brix) and skin hardness, round shaped fruit and perfect net. H7, an Inodorus cultivar, has some potential characteristics. This hybrid has good vegetative growth, good appearance of fruit, white flesh and the highest TSS (10.50%Brix) than the other Inodorus hybrids. PKBT’s hybrids has higher stem diameter, harder fruit and higher TSS but has longer day to harvest than introduced hybrids. Var. Cantaloupensis has higher stem diameter and skin hardness but has lower fruit weight and longer harvest day than var. Inodorus.
