Abstract

The objectives of this study were as follows: (1) to analyze the characteristics of farmer group members in implementing technological innovation of smallholders coffee farming; (2) analyze the ability level of farmer group members and (3) describe the characteristics of members, dynamic and role of groups that associated with member’s capability. The study was designed as a descriptive correlation study that conducted in January-March 2010. The number of 88 respondents using proportionate stratified random sampling method of all smallholder coffee farming groups in Sidomulyo Village Silo District Jember Regency. Primary and secondary data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics with Tau-B Kendall correlation. Results showed that there were some differences in the characteristic between members of smallholder coffee farming groups for intermediate level and advanced level. Group dynamic and role intermediate and advanced level were high, but for advanced level still low on group role as an economic units. Member’s capability level of them were high but for advanced level still low in the technological innovation implementation of post harvest and access to information, capital and markets. Characteristics of group members that showed significantly positive correlation with capability in the technological innovation implementation of coffee farming were the experience of farming, membership mass of farming group, the cosmopolite level and motivation. Group dynamic that showed significantly positive correlation with capability in the technological innovation implementation of coffee farming were group goals, group building, cohesiveness, group atmosphere, pressure and effectiveness of group. Likewise, the significantly positive correlation was found in the role of farming groups and capability in the technological innovation implementation of coffee farming.
