      Abstract
At present, the need of secondary habitat for the ex-captive orangutan re-introduction is becoming priority to keep this species sustainable alive. In fact, tree as one of the important habitat components is believed to be a site where orangutan can build its nests. This research was carried out in Tanjung Puting National Park from May to July 2007 about typology of Orangutan's nesting trees and nest characteristic. The objectives of this research are to find out determinant variables that influence orangutan to nest and to describe typology of preference trees and orangutan's nest characteristic. During the observations, 176 trees of Orangutan nest were observed that consist of 73 different species and 206 nests within 3 sample sites namely Wilderness, Experiment and Utility blocks. Ten variables of nesting trees as well as environmental factors were assumed influencing the orangutan to build its nest. The SPSS was tested using multiple linear regression model and resulted that nesting tree diameter and numbers of trees as feed source influenced the presence of each nest of particular trees species, with models: Y= - 0.518 + 0.236X_{1} + 0.133X10 (R ^ 2 = 63.3%) in Wilderness block ; Y = - 0.858 - 0.257X_{1} + 0.119X_{10} (R ^ 2 = 74.8%) in Utility block and Y = - 0.487 + 0.178X_{10}(R ^ 2 = 73.3%) in Experiment block. Neu's method was used to identify among 73 trees species which were preferred by orangutan as its nesting site. There were 42 of 73 trees species which the most preference by orangutan, i.e. Dryobalanops oocarpa (katur merah) Pometia pinnata (idur beruang), Parastemon urophyllus (bentan) Eusideroxylon zwagerii (ulin), Palaquium borneensis (getah merah) and Quercus bennettii (pempaning).
