      Abstract
      Tanah-tanah yang didominasi mineral liat smektit mempunyai prospek yang cukup besar untuk dikembangkan menjadi lahan pertanian tanaman pangan asal dibarengi dengan pengelolaan tanaman dan tanah yang tepat. Tanah ini umumnya meliputi tanah Vertisol (Endoakuert, Khromudert, dan Khromustert, dan Hapludert Tipik), sebagian Inceptisol (Endoaquept dan Eutrudept Vertik), dan sebagian Alfisol (Hapludalf dan Haplustalf Vertik) yang penyebarannya cukup luas di tanah air, yaitu lebih dari 2.12 juta ha, masing-masing tersebar di wilayah Jawa (Jabar, Jateng, dan Jatim), Sulawesi (Sulsel, Sulteng, dan Gorontalo), dan Nusa Tenggara (Lombok). Walaupun kadar K total tanah ini tinggi tapi ketersediaan K bagi tanaman sering menjadi masalah karena K difiksasi oleh mineral liat tipe 2:1, seperti dari golongan smektit yang dominan di tanah tersebut. Oleh karena itu perlu dilakukan berbagai upaya untuk mengatasi fiksasi K tanah sehingga ketersediaannya meningkat bagi tanaman.
       
      Research aimed to study the role of oxalic acid, Na+, NH4+, and Fe3+ in increasing available K in smectitic soils for maize (Zea mays, L.) were conducted in Laboratory of Soil Science, Kyoto University, Laboratory of Research and Soil Test, and Green House of Indonesian Soil Research Institute, Bogor. The experiments used 91 of composite soil samples taken from Java that represented Inceptisols, Vertisols, as well as Alfisols. Four bulk soil samples taken from Jonggol, Bogor (Typic Hapludalfs), Sidareja, Cilacap (Chromic Endoaquerts), Padas, Ngawi (Typic Endoaquerts), and Todanan, Blora (Typic Haplustalfs) were also used in the experiments. The results showed that most of K in the smectitic soils was in non-exchangeable form, thus it was not available for plant growth immediately.
