      Abstract
      Pemanfaatan tanah-tanah yang memiliki horison akumulasi atau penimbunan liat banyak menghadapi faktor pembatas produksi. Horison yang relatif padat di bawah lapisan olah dan dekat dengan permukaan tanah mengakibatkan laju perkolasi terhambat, tanah cepat jenuh air dan mudah tererosi, serta terbatasnya daerah perakaran tanaman, sehingga produktivitas tanah menjadi terbatas. Di Indonesia tanah-tanah yang memiliki horison penimbunan liat seperti Alfisol (5,2 juta ha), Ultisol (45,8 juta ha), dan Inceptisol (70,5 juta ha) merupakan alternatif untuk pengembangan usaha pertanian. Tanah-tanah tersebut dapat berkembang dari bahan induk sedimen (batuliat dan batukapur) maupun pada bahan induk bahan volkan (volkanik).
       
      A study of soil with clay accumulation horizon was conducted on 10 pedons of ultisols, alfisols, inceptisols derived from sedimentary and volcanic rocks. The investigation was aimed to study the characteristics of soil with clay accumulation horizons through the use of physical,chemical, mineralogical, macro- and micro-morphological data. Soil morphology and particle size distributions indicated that not all of the B horizons of pedons sampled meet the argilic horizon definition.
