Studies on the inheritence of bacterial wilt (Pseudomonas solanacearum E. F. Smith) resistance in tomato were carried out by crossing resistant and susceptible lines based on artificial inoculations into four weeks old seedlings. The seedlings were grown in steam sterilized soil media in greenhouse at IPB Experimental Farm, Tajur, Bogor (250 m above sea level). Bacterial suspension was obtained from bacterial wilt infected tomato plant grown in the field. Paretns, FI, BC, and F2 families of reciprocal resistant x susceptible and susceptible x susceptible crosses were evaluated simultaneously for bacterial wilt resistance. There was no evidence for maternal control of resistance. It was shown that additive gene effects made the major contribution to variation in bacterial wilt resistance. Dominance gene effects made important contribution only in one susceptible x resistant cross at the early stage of disease incidence.
