      Abstract
      Tanah di Indonesia sebagian besar terdiri dari tanah merah yang telah terlapuk lanjut. Kebanyakan tanah tersebut didominasi liat aktivitas rendah sehingga dapat menimbulkan masalah bagi pertumbuhan tanaman. Salah satu komponen liat tersebut adalah besi oksida. Sehubungan dengan lahan subur banyak dikonversi untuk tujuan non pertanian, maka tanah merah berliat aktivitas rendah merupakan alternatif pengembangan kesinambungan pertanian. Namun tantangannya akan semakin berat karena masalah tersebut. Untuk mengantisipasi pengembangan pertanian pada tanah tersebut, maka penelitian tentang komponen dasar tanah khususnya besi oksida perlu dilakukan. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mempelajari karakteristik mineral dan sifat tanah-LAR, serta hubungan besi oksida dengan beberapa sifat fisik dan kimia tanah-LAR.
       
      A large portion of Indonesia land area is occupied by extensive red soils with advance weathering. Many of these soils are dominated by low activity clay, so as to pose a problem for crop cultivation. One of the constituent of the clay is iron axide. In relation with the conversion of productive agricultural lands into nonagricultural uses in Java, these extensive red soils with low activity clay in the outer islands will serve as an alternative for future expansion of agriculture.
