      Abstract
A comparative study of sperm quality between the Green Jungle fowl (Gallus varius) and the Lokal fowl (Gallus domesticus) has been conducted. This experiment was conducted to identify the sperm quality of Green Jungle fowls (Gallus varius) and the Domestic fowls (Gallus domesticus). Semen was collected from 5 Green Jungle fowls and 5 Domestic fowls by massage and evaluated macroscopic and microscopically. Semen evaluation includes volume of ejaculation, smell, color, viscosity, pH, concentration, mass movement, percentage of motility, life and death and normality of the sperm cells. Semen was collected and evaluated individually with 5 replications weekly. The results showed that the semen quality of the Green Jungle fowl (Gallus varius) was significantly different (p<0,05) in volume, concentration and motility. However no differences were found in percentage of living and normality. Ejaculate volume of the Green Jungle fowl was 0,02±0,004 ml with sperm concentration of (62,5 ± 21)x 107 cells/ml and percentage ofliving 84,5 ± 3,2%. Ejaculate volume the Domestic fowl was 0,16 ± 0,02 ml with sperm concentration (176,8 ± 49,4) x 107 cells/ml and percentage of living 85,1 ± 4,4 %. Sperm motility of the Green Jungle fowls was 68,1 ± 2,9 % with slight mass movement (+). Sperm motility of the Domestic fowls was 71,9 ± 1,1 % and mass movement of (+) while pH from both the Green Jungle fowl and the Domestic fowl were similar. Percentage of normality of spermatozoa of the Green Jungle fowl was 80,7±3,1% and that of the Domestic fowl was 86,2±3,6 %. Semen of the Green Jungle fowl is like semen of the Domestic fowl were similar in color, smell, and viscosity. It could be concluded that semen quality of domestic fowls in some aspects is superior as compared to those of the green jungle fowl.
