      Abstract

The level of the fatty body of Friesian Holstein (FH) cows impacts the metabolic system, which will affect the physiological response. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between body condition score (BCS) and physiological responses of FH cows. The research samples comprised 35 lactating FH cows from Cibugary Farm in Jakarta. As part of the physiological responses, variables such as rectal temperature (Tr), skin surface temperature (Ts), body temperature (Tb), respiratory frequency (Rr), and heart rate (Hr) were assessed. Meanwhile, the BCS was rated from 1 to 5. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation and stepwise regression using SPSS 27 software. Results showed that BCS had a significant negative correlation with Tr, Tb, and Hr in the afternoon, although in a low category. In the morning, BCS had a positive but insignificant relationship with Tr, Ts, Tb, and Rr, except for Hr. Stepwise regression suggested that BCS could predict Tr, Tb, and Hr in FH cows, though the predictive ability remained low. BCS was found competent to assess physiological responses, specifically Tr, Tb, and Hr, in FH cows raised at low elevations under moderate heat stress, as the conclusion.
