      Abstract

The genus Caridina is a freshwater shrimp of the family Atyidae (Crustacea: Decapoda) capable of living in all types of freshwater. This genus is divided into two groups based on its nature, namely amphidromous, which completes its life cycle to estuary (sea), and landlocked, which has fully adapted to the freshwater environment. This study aims to identify and describe Caridina spp. from three rivers in West Java based on morphological characters. Sampling locations were determined purposively by road sampling. Morphological characters described the specimens obtained. The results showed that there are five species of the genus Caridina, namely Caridina cognata, Caridina gracilipes, and three other species unknown. Two of the five species, namely C. cognata and C. gracilipes have small eggs, which are characteristic of the amphidromous group. Of the three unknown species, two of them have large eggs that are characteristic of the landlocked group, and one is unknown. The three unknown species have the potential to be new species distinguished by morphological characters, namely carapace, rostrum, first pereiopod, second pereiopod, third pereiopod, telson, and diaeresis.
