      Abstract

Mosquito-repellent products generally contain synthetic active compounds that can be harmful if used excessively at high levels and do not comply with the instructions on the product label. para-Mentane-3,8-diol (PMD) compound is one of the alternative mosquito-repellent active ingredients with a protective effect comparable to N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET). PMD can be synthesized through a citronellal intramolecular cyclization reaction catalyzed by acids. This study examines the influence of temperature, acid concentration, and reaction time on the yield and selectivity of PMD formation. The results showed optimal reaction conditions at 70 °C, sulfuric acid concentration of 0.25%, and reaction time of 5 hours, resulting in PMD yield of 90.60%, citronellal conversion of 98.44%, and selectivity of PMD of 92.04%. Characterization using GC-MS and FTIR, as well as physicochemical properties tests, also confirmed the success of the formation of PMD compounds. Keywords: mosquito-repellent, PMD, intramolecular cyclization reaction, citronellal
