      Abstract

Coal is one of the abundant natural resources in Sumatra and Kalimantan. This study aims to determine the effect of inherent moisture, ash content, and total sulfur parameters on the calorific value of coal from West Sumatra, as well as to determine the quality of West Sumatra coal based on coal calorific value. This research uses the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard method with samples from two areas in West Sumatra. Moisture, ash and total sulphur tests were conducted using ASTM D3173/D3173M-17a, ASTM D3174-12 (2018) and ASTM D4239-18 standards, while calorific value was measured with a bomb calorimeter based on ASTM D5865/D5865M-19. Results shown that inherent moisture and ash content are inversely proportional to calorific value, while total sulphur is directly proportional to calorific value. The calorific value of coal can be predicted using these parameters. West Sumatra coal belongs to the subbituminous category, with samples from region B having a higher calorific value compared to region A, indicating the better quality of region B coal.
