      Abstract

This research focuses on the development of hard capsule shells made from non-gelatin materials, specifically carrageenan derived from seaweed (Eucheuma cottonii) and apple pectin, as an alternative to gelatin. Carrageenan was extracted from seaweed using 0.9 N KOH for 60 minutes, resulting in a yield of 21.87 %, a moisture content of 10.01 %, and a sulfate content of 23.58 %, all of which met the required standards. The best formula for the capsule shell was formula 3, which consisted of 0.73 % pectin, 6.50 % carrageenan, and 92.77 % distilled water. This formula demonstrated the best results in various tests, with a disintegration time of 11 minutes and 18 seconds, a moisture content of 13.30 %, and a dissolution rate of 99.83 %. The analysis of functional groups using a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer also showed the presence of pectin with characteristic absorption at a wave peak of 1605 cm-1, indicating the presence of the carbonyl group C=O, and the characteristic kappa carrageenan peak at 847.08 cm-1, indicating C–O–SO3. Therefore, the resulting capsule shell is considered successful and can be used as a drug delivery system.
