Synthesis of Heterogeneous Catalyst from Salicylaldehyde-1,2-cyclohexanediamine Metal Complexes for Oxidation of Secondary Alcohol to Ketone.
Abstract
Heterogeneous catalysts from salicylaldehyde-1,2-cyclohexanediamine metal complexes anchored on silica have been synthesized. Cobalt and copper was used in this study. Characterization of resulting catalysts have been carried out by Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR) and atomic absorption spectrophotometer analysis. In this research, the performance of both catalysts in oxidation of secondary alcohol have been tested. Oxidation of a secondary alcohol was carried out by addition of catalyst (10 mol%) into secondary alcohol-acetonitrile mixture. The reaction was carried out by passing oxygen gas over the mixture for 4 h at ambient temperature. The secondary alcohol sample used in this oxidation reaction was 2-propanol. FTIR analysis shows that both catalysts were able to oxydize the 2-propanol. The ketone was characterized by the present of C=O stretching vibration. Both catalysts showed quite similar selectivity toward the 2-propanol.
