      Abstract
      The objective of the study was to find out the effect of seed position in fruit cavity to the number of hermaphrodite tree, tree performance, some of fruit quality properties, and its uniformity. The experiment was carried out on PKBT collection ground at Pasir Kuda, Ciomas, Bogor from April 2003 to November 2003. Observation was conducted on Redking trees population that was 12 month old in the field to determine the number of hermaphrodite trees. The popülation was divided in three rows of trees. Each rows of trees derived from the Seed of fruit-base, middle, or tip. Sample trees were selected with random sampling method for each sub-population trees planted from seed of fruit-base, midale, and tip respectively 10, 10, and 5 trees. To conclude tree and fruit uniformity, observation was conducted only on sample trees and fruits. The result shows that subpopulatin from the middle seed of fruit cavity produce largest number of hermaphrodit tree. The best tree performance was shown by subpopulation from the base seed of fruit cavity. Seed position fruit cavity affect on fruit quality properties, such as fruit diameter and peel weight. The largest fruit diameter produced by subpopulation from the seed from fruit base and the smallest peel weight percentage produce by subpopulation from the seed of fruit tip. Fruit from the whole population have differences on seed weight percentage. The best fruit quality uniformity shown by fruit from trees derived from the tip of fruit cavity seed subpopulation. Further research should be done using better experimental design so can obtain better conclusion.
