      Abstract

Indotestudo forstenii (Reptilia; Testudinidae) is an endemic tortoise adapted to live on Central Sulawesi mainland. Local people call it 'bantiluku'. Bantiluku has a golden yellow body and carapace. Some bantiluku individuals have nuchal scales and some do not. The high rate of exploitation and the rapid rate of habitat loss due to forest clearing led to a decline in natural populations. The IUCN defines bantiluku conservation status as critically endangered. This study aims to indentify the characteristics of bantiluku habitat in Bale Village, Donggala Regency, Central Sulawesi. Ecological data taken were air temperature, soil temperature, soil pH, air humidity, and soil moisture. The survey, which was conducted in July 2021 - February 2022, managed to find six holes indicating abandoned nests and two nests containing bantiluku individuals. The habitat where bantiluku was found is a scattered surface. Bantiluku dug a hole according to the size of its body as a resting place. The temperature of the nest holes range from 26-29 °C and the soil pH ranges from 4.5-7.0. The tortoise can be found in the habitat of herbaceous and shrub plants such as Fatoua villosa, Hypoestes phyllostachya, Chromolaena odorata, Cyanotis axillaris, Mallotus philippensis, Momordica charantia, and Bryophillum pinnatum.
