Prevalence of Feline Panleukopenia Infection at Shakalaka Vet Care and Surgery, Putatan, Sabah, Malaysia

Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) is a single stranded DNA virus belonging to the family Parvoviridae and presents as the causative agent of felinepanleukopenia (FPL). The virus is shed in the faeces, urine and nasal secretions of infected cats and can persist in the environment for up to a year. The virus then transmitted via fomite or direct between infected cats to other cats. The issue of feline panleukopenia infections is rampant among cat population in Sabah, Malaysia and this fatal disease has led to the deaths of many cats. The purpose of the study is to measure the prevalence of feline panleukopenia infections in cats at Shakalaka Vet Care and Surgery, Sabah, Malaysia in hopes to may promote the community to take preventive measures to improve welfare of cats. The data obtained are secondary data collected from the clinical records of Shakalaka Vet Care and Surgery, Sabah, Malaysia for the months of January to June of 2021. The collected data were analyzed descriptively and to determine the relationship between the incidence of feline panleukopenia with age, sex, vaccination status and neuter status were statistically analyzed using the Chi square test. There was a total of 1570 cats that were brought in to Shakalaka Vet Care and Surgery from the months of January to June 2021. Of the total number of cats, 91 of the cats were diagnosed with feline panleukopenia making the overall prevalence 5.8%. It was also observed that cats aged 1-6 months that were unvaccinated and not neutered were comprised many of the cases. The age, sex, vaccination status and neuter status did not correlate to the occurrence of feline panleukopenia infection. Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) adalah virus DNA beruntai tunggal dari famili virus Parvoviridae dan merupakan agen penyebab feline panleukopenia (FPL). Virus ini dieksresikan di feses, urin, dan eksreta hidung kucing yang terinfeksi dan mampu bertahan di lingkungan sehingga setahun. Virus ini kemudian ditularkan melalui kontak langsung antara kucing terinfeksi dengan kucing sehat. Isu infeksi panleukopenia kucing merajalela di antara populasi kucing di Sabah, Malaysia dan penyakit fatal ini telah menyebabkan kematian banyak kucing. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengukur prevalensi infeksi feline panleukopenia pada kucing di Shakalaka Vet Care and Surgery, Sabah, Malaysia dengan harapan dapat mendorong masyarakat untuk melakukan tindakan preventif dan meningkatkan kesejahteraan kucing. Data yang terkumpul dianalisis secaradeskriptif, untuk menentukan hubungan antara kejadian feline panleukopenia dengan umur, jenis kelamin, status vaksinasi dan status sterilisasi dianalisis secara statistik menggunakan uji Chi Square. Data yang diperoleh adalah data sekunder yang dikumpulkan dari catatan klinis Shakalaka Vet Care and Surgery, Sabah, Malaysia selama bulan Januari hingga Juni 2021. Total ada 1570 kucing yang dibawa ke Shakalaka Vet Care and Surgery dari bulan Januari hingga Juni 2021. Sejumlah 91 kucing didiagnosis menderita panleukopenia kucing sehingga prevalensi keseluruhan 5,8%, berdasarkan data yang diperoleh bahwa sebagian kasus terjadi pada kucing berusia 1-6 bulan yang tidak divaksinasi dan tidak sterilisasi. Berdasarkan hasil uji Chi square, kejadian feline panleukopenia tidak ada korelasi dengan umur, jenis kelamin, status vaksinasi dan status sterilisasi.
