Straw cellulose as heavy metal adsorbent has a low adsorption capacity so it needs to be modified. This study aims to synthesize cellulose-TiO2-g-poly(acrylic acid) as an adsorbent and apply it determine the adsorption capacity and isotherm of U(VI) ions. Cellulose was isolated from rice straw. The result was modified through graft copolymerization and then used for adsorption by the static method (batch). The initial and final concentrations of U(VI) ions were measured by UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Cellulose isolation resulted in a yield of 26.73%. The adsorbent synthesis resulted in a grafting percentage of 16.18%. FTIR spectrum analysis showed that acrylic acid was grafted onto cellulose-TiO2 with a new functional group appearance at 1,683.93 cm-1, namely C=O stretching. The adsorption capacity of the adsorbent to the optimal U(VI) ion at an initial concentration of 70 ppm. The value of R2 indicates the Freundlich isotherm on a heterogeneous surface. The value of n > 1 implies the occurrence of
physical adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent to the U(VI) ion is 36.2319 mg/g. The modified product has a small percentage of degradation to acid and the degree of swelling to water so it is potential to be an effective adsorbent.
