      Abstract

Carbon dots are fluorescence nanoparticles measuring approximately 10 nm. Carbon dots can be synthesized from raw materials such as mangosteen peels using pyrolysis, hydrothermal, and solvothermal. Mangosteen peel waste can be used as a material for making carbon dots because it contains cyanidin and xanthone that can increase the intensity of carbon dot fluorescence. The addition of a urea passivation agent is expected to increase the intensity of carbon dot luminescence. The study aims to synthesize carbon dots from natural ingredients of mangosteen peel with three different methods in the form of pyrolysis, hydrothermal, and solvothermal and its potential to produce fluorescent colors. Carbon dot yield from high to low successively obtained on the solvothermal method by 21%, hydrothermal by 5%, and pyrolysis by 2%. Carbon dot luminescence in all three methods is blue. The luminescence intensity from high to low is successive solvothermal, hydrothermal, and pyrolysis methods. The addition of a passivation agent in the form of urea causes an increase in luminescence from carbon dots. The solvothermal method produces the most carbon dot yields with the best fluorescent intensity.
