      Relationship between Empathy and Intelligence of Undergraduate Students in Indonesia

      Abstract
      Empathy is the ability to understand the feelings and emotions of others, which is important for social interaction in humans. Empathy was predicted can be influenced by the intelligence because individuals with high intelligence are better at understanding and interpreting situational cues. So far, few studies have directly explained the correlation between empathy and intelligence in undergraduate students, but the results are inconsistent and imply that some demographic and cultural backgrounds affect the results. In addition, the relationship between empathy and intelligence of undergraduate students in Indonesia has not been known yet. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the relationship between empathy and intelligence of undergraduate students in Indonesia. This research was conducted using an online platform, with a total of 316 undergraduate students who participated in this research. Each respondent filled out a questionnaire consisting of demographic data, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) to assess self-report empathy, and their intelligence using the Baddeley Reasoning Test (BRT). This study showed that undergraduate students in Indonesia have high self-report empathy (Mean = 74.09) and intelligence scores (Mean = 20.58). However, the correlation between empathy and intelligence has no significant correlation (R = –0.017, p-value = 0.76). Thus, it implies that intelligence is not the variable that affects empathy.
       
      Empati adalah kemampuan untuk memahami perasaan dan emosi orang lain, yang penting untuk interaksi sosial pada manusia. Empati diprediksi dapat dipengaruhi oleh kecerdasan karena individu dengan kecerdasan tinggi lebih baik dalam memahami dan menginterpretasikan isyarat situasional. Sejauh ini, beberapa penelitian menjelaskan korelasi antara empati dan kecerdasan pada mahasiswa sarjana, tetapi hasilnya tidak konsisten dan menunjukkan bahwa beberapa latar belakang demografi dan budaya mempengaruhi hasil penelitian. Selain itu, hubungan empati dengan kecerdasan mahasiswa sarjana di Indonesia belum diketahui. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan empati dengan kecerdasan mahasiswa sarjana di Indonesia. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan platform online, dengan jumlah mahasiswa sarjana sebanyak 316 orang. Setiap responden mengisi kuesioner yang terdiri dari data demografi, Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) untuk menilai empati laporan diri, dan kecerdasan mereka menggunakan Baddeley Reasoning Test (BRT). Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa sarjana di Indonesia memiliki skor tinggi pada empati yang dilaporkan diri sendiri (Mean = 74.09) dan skor kecerdasan (Mean = 20.58). Namun korelasi antara empati dan kecerdasan tidak memiliki korelasi yang signifikan (R = –0,017, p-value = 0.76). Dengan demikian, menyiratkan bahwa kecerdasan bukanlah variabel yang mempengaruhi empati.
