      Abstract

Changes in temperature affect changes in fish behaviour and one of important factors for fish survival. The optimum temperature of a species can be used as information on fish existence for capture fisheries data. Heart rate of fish can be used as an indicator to know the effect of temperature on fish physiology. The aim of this study are to determine the effect of temperature on fish heart rate and its recovery time. Heart rate data were collected by observing on 40 eels (Anguilla bicolor) measuring 36±0.30 cm and body weight <200 g at different temperatures of 21, 25, and 31°C. The observation of heart rate was monitored by electrocardiograph (ECG) technique. The results from video monitoring was calculated using frame-by-frame video analysis. The effect of temperature on heart rate and recovery time was processed using statistical analysis with complete randomized design. The results showed that the eel heart rates at 21, 25, and 31°C were 40±1.61, 70±3.91, and 122±7.36 bpm, respectively. Temperature significantly affected (P<0.05) to the heart rate of eel with the lower Q10 value, 2.77 and 2.25. Recovery time of eel heart rate at low temperature was longer than high temperature.
