Indonesia has 239 species of bats, this number consists of 62 species of
megachiropteran and 117 of microchiropteran. Species identification is generally
carried out through morphology and special features. These methods requires to
caught the bats. It is considered less efficient, can harm the bats, and increase the
risk of disease transmission between humans and bats. Identification through
echolocation sound is considered to reduce the risk.
Microchiroptera bats and the Rousettus (Megachiroptera) have the ability to
echolocation. The type and character calls that are produced have distinct. These
distinct can be considered for identification. The process of identification by calls
is not yet fully done in Indonesia. Lack of data about the echolocation character of
each species becomes problematic. Therefore, this research aims to analyze and
collect data on the characteristics of the echolocation bats calls to be used as a basis
for identification through calls.
Rhinolohidae and Hipposideridae produced cf calls with a relatively longer
duration, while Vespertilionidae and Megaderma spasma produced fm calls.
Rhinolophus pusillus, R. stheno, R. affinis, H. larvatus, H. diadema, M. australis,
M. fuliginosus, and Megaderma spasma each have a peak frequency of 104,1, 86,
06, 71,69, 99,26, 69,24, 65,12, 54.29, and 31,69 kHz. The most suitable method to
record calls of R. affinis, R. stheno, H. diadema, and M. fuliginosus are when bats
in the pouch, R. pusillus and M. australis when held in hand, and H. larvatus when
the bat in a room. R. affinis echolocation calls in different habitat have differences
in start frequency (fs), calls intensity (is), and interval calls (jr) characters. R.
pusillus calls different on fs, constant frequency (fc), end frequency (fe), peak
frequency (fp), and constant frequency of harmonic (hc). R. stheno calls differs on
is. The calls of H. larvatus differs in fc, fe, fp, and jr. H. diadema calls differs on
duration (dur), fc, and fp. The calls of M. fuliginosus and M. muricola differ on fs,
fe, fp, is, and jr. M. australis calls differs on fs and is. Chaerephon plicatus calls
different on fp. Constant frequency character differences are affected by the tree
and non-tree branch free height, total non-tree height, non-tree header width, and
wind speed. The start frequency of harmonic (hs) sound of bats is influenced by
temperature and wind speed. The end frequency of harmonic (he) is affected by the
total height of the non-tree, the width of the non-tree header, the area of the nontree base area, and the total height of the tree.
