      Abstract
Large tropical rain forest (no least than 138 million hectares) occur in Indonesia. Bryophyte diversity is the highest one in tropical rain forest compared to any others major ecosystem in the world. Diversity of bryophyte may change along altitude, as well as type of substrate. This research aims to record diversity of bryophyte of Mount Merbabu and their distribution along altitude and type of substrate. Samples were collected from Mount Merbabu National Park throughout Selo track dan Tekelan track until the peak. The total of Bryophyte flora of the mountain was 57 species (39 genus, 25 family), consist of one species of hornworth, eight species of liverworths (seven genus, six family), and 48 species of mosses (31 genus, 18 family). Species diversity increased along with the increased of altitude at montane zone, however it decreased in the alpine zone. Most of bryophytes (40 species) are terrestrial, they lived on the soil, log, and stones. Fifteen species are epiphytes, they occured on bark of tree trunk. The two others are terrestrial and epiphyte species.
