Web-based GIS cambodia natural conservation areas information system (Case study: Phnom Prich, Mondulkiri Province, Cambodia)
Abstract
Internet has become a competent technology for data communication due to distributing technology of the web servers. The data and maps reach to the thin clients with the minimum system requirements at end user and with the click of a button. Such technology has not only popularized the whole world but has moved scientific body to one step up. Geographers and planners, who use map and related information traditionally to plan and manage, have found internet technology of much use since it reduces the cost of data management and information distribution to mass usages. With the advent of GIS and internet technologies, the conventional intricacies to get solutions in time and position have been improved. Users can combine data and information accessed over the intranet/internet with the local data for display, query and analysis. The major goal of this project was to implement a Web-Based GIS that enhances the information system of natural conservation areas. To accomplish the above-stated goal, the project has four objectives such as: developing a geographic information system with web basis (WebGIS) for Cambodia Natural Conservation Areas; called as CNCAIS – Cambodia Natural Conservation Areas Information System, interfaced with GIS for the analysis and visualization of spatial data in vector/image format, permits the combination of GIS data with tabular data, and allow the users to access the databases via standard internet/intranet explorer such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Opera, or Netscape Navigator. Web-Based GIS CNCAIS performance has been tested by sample end user and the representation of government officer (Ministry of Environment). This process was done to see what are the comments from the users after seeing and using this system. Generally, the users understand how to use web application in order to get the information as they needed thorough intranet since on the web application is provided with common navigation menu; just like when they open other websites on the internet. To cover this problem, Web-Based GIS Cambodia Natural Conservation Areas Information System will be equipped with help tools which consists the manual guide to help the users. Through this system, the users will be able to query and locate plots, roads, national park and other geographic features of interest, as well as view information about them, and create maps on-screen or to print. The users can turn map layers “on” or “off,” depending upon user needs. Also, some of these layers are scale-dependent and can only be viewed when you are zoomed in far enough.
