Mount Gede Pangrango National Park is the example of a protected area in which land conflict happens. The surrounding communities run their cultivation activities inside the national park which are actually illegal according to the law. This research aims to capture the progress of conservation efforts vis-a-vis such an encroachment issue as well as to explore the characteristics of the surrounding villages that can explain the encroachment level. To this end, this research performed spatial analysis and stepwise multiple regression using Landsat imagery, Google Earth images and village potential data. The result shows that the area of plantation, dry agriculture land and bare land were declining. The encroachment level could be associated with the distance of settlement to the number of farm laborers around and the land slope of the national park. Meanwhile, the existence of large land occupied by the private company could restrain the tendency of local people to encroach the land of national park.

Social Interaction of Indonesian Rural Youths in the Internet Age

Social Interaction of Indonesian Rural Youths in the Internet Age
Priatama, Rista Ardy; Onitsuka, Kenichiro; Rustiadi, Ernan; Hoshino, Satoshi
The internet penetration on young villagers gives rise to question about its effects on the social interaction and behavior patterns as it accelerates the interaction with the wider network. However, the internet could possibly decrease both the social interaction with local people at the village and the dependency toward native villagers as internet utilization allows the users to be more selective in terms of interactions according to their interests. This research aims to examine the impacts of the Internet through a dystopian view by comparing the degrees of senses of place, participation in local activities, and social capital among internet and non-internet users using a statistical approach. The analysis of variance and linear regression were employed in the present study. The results revealed that the internet did strengthen both broad and local social capital. It also supported young villager’s participation in local activities. Nevertheless, the internet was observed to decline the villager’s sense of place, especially the desire to remain a resident in the native village. Better access to information and network gained by the users elevated their chances to move outside the village when better opportunities were observed elsewhere.

Supartha, I.W.; Rauf, A.; Triwidodo, Hermanu
The flight activity of Liriomyza huidobrensis (Blanchard) (Diptera: Agromyzidae) on potato was studied at the field station of Lembang Vegeteble Research Institute, West Java (alt. 1250 m) from June to September 1997. The study covered the time and flight positioned of L. huidobrensis on the plants. Adults flight activity were observed at 07.00, 09.00, 11.00, 13.00, 15.00, 17.00 h and 07.00 by using yellow stcky traps positioned at 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, and 90 cm above ground level. The results 07.00 to 11.00 with positioned at 15 cm and 30 cm above ground level.

Extracts seeds, fruits, and leaves of Brucea javanica, Piper aduncum, and Tephrosia vogelii were tested separately and also in mixture (3:2.5:1) in the laboratory for their insecticidal activity against the cabbage head caterpillar, Crocidolomia pavonana. B. javanica, P. aduncum, and T. vogelii plant materials were extracted with ethyl acetate-methanol (9:1), ethyl acetate, and ethyl acetate respectively by using maceration method. Insecticidal bioassays were done by a leaf-residue feeding method. Second-instar larvae C. pavonana were fed extracttreated broccoli leaves for 48 hrs and then were presented untreated leaves until the surviving larvae reached the fourth-instar stage. Larval mortality was assessed at 5 days after treatment, and the data analyzed by the probit method. The results showed that larval mortality started at first day treatment and increased at second day’s treatment. After changing with untreated leaves the mortality decreased significantly. Based on LC50 and LC95 values, T. vogelii leaf extract was more toxic (LC50= 0.06%, LC95= 0.12%) than P. aduncum fruit extract (LC50 = 0.24%, LC95=0.32%) and B. javanica seed extract (LC50=0.17%, LC95 =0.41%). Based on value of LC50 (0.03%) and LC95 (0.05%), the toxicity of a mixture of B. javanica, P. aduncum, and T. vogelii extract (3:2.5:1) against C. pavonana larvae was very toxic. Based on the combination index according to the independent joint action model, the extract mixture had a strongly synergistic joint action against C. pavonana larvae, at level LC50 and LC95, with a combination index of 0.225 and 0.190. The mixture extract worked better than each single extract against C. pavonana
