Taeniosis/cysticercosis due to T. solium is one of the most important public health problem in
Papua (fonnerly Irian Jaya). This parasitic zoonosis spread in six regencies in Papua, mostly
in Papua Province. With exception of Manokwari Regency, the disease has not been reported
in other part of West Papua Province. The preliminary study was designed to elucidate
prevalence of cysticercosis in Sorong area. This study was done by conducting carcass and
visceral inspection, and ELISA test on 30 pigs slaughtered at Remu Market, City of Sorong,
during period of July-September 2013. Of30 pigs examined and sampled in this study, none
of them was positive neither for T solillnl norTaenia hydaligenacysticercosis. The serological
test showed that one out of 30 samples (3.33%) showed positive reaction in the ELISA test.
The positive pig originated from Sorong Manoi District of Sorong City. This indicates the
presence of viablecysticercus in the pig from District SorongManoi, Sorong. Result of the
present serological test should be carefully interpreted . Further studies are needed to elucidate
whether is the cysticercosis is caused by Taeniasoliumor other Taeniaspecies metacestodes as
the ELISA is not able to distinguish between the two specieses. Nevertheless veterinary and
health authorities in Sorong Area should aware and working together to prevent spread of
cysticecosis in the area. Importantstepthat must betaken is toset up slaughterhouse facilities
for pigs, including establishing meat in spection system in the slaughter house. Community
awareness to the disease should be encourged through community health education programs.
