dc.description.abstract | Carrageenan is a polysaccharide extracted from red seaweed Rhodophyceae, so it can be used as polysaccharide-based raw material such as hard capsule shell. Th e purpose of this study was to use carrageenan as hard capsule shell material. Th e processing of hard capsule shell was conducted manually by immersion of capsule cast into carrageenan solution. Th e formulation of the solution that used in this research consisted of four treatments, 3%, 4%, 5%, and 6% carrageenan concentration. Th e best formula was determined based on capsule shell spesifi cation, moisture content, and disintegration time. Th e carrageenan used in this research contained 18.38% moisture, 17.58% ash, 17.90% sulphate and 124 cP viscosity. Th e capsule shells specifi cation had 17.75-18.45 mm of length body capsule and 11.23-11.42 mm of cap, 7.19- 7.44 mm of body diameter and 7.35-7.69 mm of cap, 0.63-68 mL in volume, 0.029-0.151 mm in thickness, 0.037-0.129 g in weight of capsules. Th e carrageenan concentration signifi cantly aff ected disintegration time and viscosity solution of capsule shell formation, but no eff ect on the moisture content of the capsules shell. Th e best formulations capsule shell was 5% carrageenan that had 6,100-10,333 cP viscosity, 17.43% water content and 20.59 minutes disintegration time. | id |
