Sea star Culcita schmideliana is a species from an Asteroidean class which is potential as antimicrobial source. Th e aims of this study were to investigate the active compounds of the extracts and their antimicrobial activity. Phytochemical test, antimicrobial assay, fractionation with thin layer chromatography, and bioautography were performed in this study. Th e result of the qualitative phytochemical test showed that methanol extract contained alkaloid, steroid, fl avonoid, saponin, and ninhidrin, whereas n-hexane and ethyl acetate extracts contained steroids and saponins. Th e highest antimicrobial activity was showed by ethyl acetate extract at 2 mg/well with diameter of inhibition zone was 16 mm. Fractination with TLC revealed 7 spots under UV light at λ 254 and one spot at λ 366 nm. Bioautography of ethyl acetat extract using B. subtilis revealed inhibition zone at Rf = 0.02 (7 mm) and Rf = 0.62 (3 mm).id
