Forest fire is a serious problem because it can cause negative impacts for the environment. One of the forest fire prevention efforts is to build a web-based geographic information system (GIS) to manage historical hotspot data as indicators of fire occurrences. A web-based GIS for hotspots distribution in Indonesia was developed using OpenLayers in the previous research. The GIS still has several limitations in providing an attractive user interface. Therefore, in this study we created a visualization module in the GIS for hotspot distribution using GeoExplorer. With the visualization module, users can interactively explore the maps of hotspot distribution. In addition, historical hotspots data can be easily managed so that the system can assist users in obtaining summaries of historical hotspots data for the regions in Indonesia. The improved GIS presents summaries of hotspots data in forms of maps, graphs, and tables. The system also has additional supporting features in the visualization module using OpenLayers and GeoExplorer.
