Breeding program of the Sumatran rhino does not success, neither in the natural habitat nor in the captivity. Population numbers in their habitat always decline due to the habitat dectruction, illegal hunting and also because of slow breeding. The only one born in captivity is "Andafas" from Cincinnati Zoo, USA (borr? on 1 3m of September 2001) since the beginning of captive breeding program started in 1985. Breeding failure is probably caused by a) pathological formation in the utery of the female rhino, b) dificulty in detection of mating time, and c) fertility of the male rhino in captivity is not yet know wll. Therefore, semen collection, freezing and artificial insemination is a new hope approach in propagation and conservation of the Sumatran rhino.
