      Abstract
      Saat ini kebutuhan minyak bumi meningkat, sedangkan persediaannya makin menipis. Keadaan ini memacu produksi pelumas sintetis dari minyak nabati sebagai bahan dasar alternatif dalam pembuatan pelumas. Meskipun harga pelumas dasar nabati ini lebih mahal daripada minyak mineral, namun minyak ini merupakan bahan terbarukan yang mempunyai sifat friksi yang unggul, sebagai contoh, pelumasan baik, volatilitas rendah, indek viskositas tinggi, kelarutan untuk aditif pelumas tinggi, dan mudah larut dalam fluida lain. Beberapa kegunaan minyak nabati di dalam aplikasi pelumas yaitu sebagai aditif minyak sintetis, fluida transmisi, minyak motor 2 tak, minyak hidraulik, dan gemuk. Konsumsi minyak nabati untuk pelumas adalah sebesar 8 juta kilogram per tahun. Pasar terbesar adalah pelumas mesin, pelumas roda otomotif, mesin hidraulik dan mesin industri.
       
      At present, the demand of the mineral oil has increased, but the supply has decreased. This condition has pushed the production of synthetic lubricant from vegetable oil as base fluid. Although the price of vegetable oil – lubricant base fluid are more expensive than mineral oil but vegetable oil are renewable raw materials that possess certain excellent frictional properties e.g. good lubricity, low volatility, high viscosity index, solvency for lubricant additives, and easy miscibility with other fluids, etc. Some uses of vegetable oil in the lubricant application are as synthetic additive, transmission fluid, two-stroke engine oil, hydraulic fluid and grease. The consumption of vegetable oil for lubricant are 8 million kilograms per year. The large markets are engine oil, gear oil, hydraulic fluid and industrial fluid.
