Lack of oae of the common resources such as water or excessive concentration of a specific ion such as sodium will cause plants suffer from drought and salinity stresses. Those plants usually develop such a mechanism to servive under those stresses. Osmotic adjustment (which is genetically controlled), is considered as an effort of some particular plants to adapt to those physiotogicallenvironmental conditions. Eventhough numbers of international references providing abundant informations, however, so far no records in this topic are available in Indonesian, shows how important such a review for this country which possess high biodiversity of plant. Hence, this paper concerns with theoretical concepts and the mechanism of osmotic adjustment in higher plants, are discussed under the light of the richness of plant genetic diversity (both cultivated and wild species) in Indonesia.id
