A 13 month study on the reproductive cycle of a tropical freshwater mussel Vhunio adign& PBillipi (Mdlusn: Bivalvia) has been carried out in a tropical river. Gametogenesis, gravidity and larval (gloclddial) development were analpd hirtologicslly. The cycle occured throughout the year and the mussel produced multiple broods. Hennaphroditlsm was found among the population, although in a very low percentage. This phenomenon may be due to an infection by parasitic trematodes. The infection, however, did not affect the reproductive capability of the mussel. Senility was not observed in the mussel population; old mussels showed the same reproductive capability as the younger ones.id
