Abflity ojanoxygenlc photosynthetic bacteria in reducing HIS concentralion and inhibiting the growth of Vibrio harveyi Shrimp culture in Indonesia faces a few constraints, including decreasing water quality and disease caused by K harveyi. Ten isolates of anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria (APB) were isolated from Pantai lndah Kapuk, Muara Angke, and Teluk Gong to study their morphological characteristics and their ability to reduce H2S concentration in sea water and inhibit the growth of K harveyi. Some isolates which demonstrated high reduction ability were subsequently selected for their ability to compete with K harveyf, to establish potential isolates as bioconditioners in shrimp ponds. MW4, MW5, MW9 and ~ W I iOsol ates were rble to reduce the concentration of H2S. Their abilities to reduce H,S were 59, 29, 39 and 51%. repectively. In vitro competition experiments indicated that MW4 and MWS were able to inhibit the growth of V. harveyi. The results from total plate count demonstrated that MW4 and MWS could inhibit the growth of V. harveyi by 90 and 70%, respectively. Isolates of MW4 and MWS had long rod form, whercas MW9 and MWlO had short rod form. All the isolates were gram-negative. Therefore, MW4 and MW5 were considered potential for development as bioconditioners in shrimp ponds. [Keywords: Anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria, H2S reduction, biological competition, V. harveyi]
