      Abstract

Cosmic radiation in outer space consists of high-energy particles that can damage satellite components. Effective protection requires shielding materials and configurations that minimize radiation exposure. This study analyzes the distribution of secondary particles generated by proton interactions with satellite shielding using the Monte Carlo simulation method implemented in the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS). The satellite model employed is a CubeSat with a 5 mm shield made of aluminum alloy 6061-O, with additional multilayer configurations using polyethylene (PE) and lead (Pb). Proton sources with energies of 20 MeV, 40 MeV, and 60 MeV were simulated. The results show that a single aluminum shield effectively blocks primary protons but produces significant secondary particles, including electrons, photons, and neutrons. The addition of a 1 mm PE layer was not effective in reducing secondary flux, as high-energy neutrons interacting with hydrogen in PE increased photon production. In contrast, a 1 mm Pb layer reduced electron and photon fluxes, respectively, although neutron flux slightly increased. Absorbed dose analysis confirmed that both shielding material and proton energy strongly influence flux and radiation distribution within satellite components.
