      Abstract

Indonesia is one of the world's main producers of greenhouse gas emissions, dominated by CO2 emissions. The structure of primary energy consumption in Indonesia is still dominated by non-renewable energy, so a transition to new and renewable energy is being pursued. This study aims to describe the dynamics of energy consumption transition and CO2 emissions, estimate the influence of population, affluence, and technology on CO2 emissions, and forecast the impact of energy consumption transition on CO2 emissions in Indonesia in the future. Data analysis methods used include descriptive statistics, ARDL, and dynamic system modeling. The results show that throughout 1972–2023, the transition of energy consumption and CO2 emissions showed significant dynamics. In the short term, CO2 emission lag, population density, GDP per capita, and new and renewable energy consumption have a significant effect on CO2 emissions. In the long term, population density, non-renewable energy consumption, new and renewable energy consumption, and FDI significantly affect CO2 emissions, and EKC hypothesis testing shows a U-shaped relationship. Furthermore, the forecast results show that, compared to the BAU scenario, the KEN scenario is able to reduce CO2 emissions from energy consumption in 2030, 2040, 2050, and 2060 by 4.68 percent, 24.62 percent, 42.12 percent, and 59.99 percent, respectively.
