      Abstract

The seagrass ecosystem on Panjang Island serves as an important habitat for macrozoobenthos. However, information regarding macrozoobenthos communities and their relationship with seagrass in this area remains limited. Meanwhile, Panjang Island possesses high potential for marine biodiversity. This study aimed to assess the current condition of seagrass, analyze the composition of macrozoobenthos, and examine the association between the two. Seagrass data were collected using the Seagrass Watch method and macrozoobenthos samples were obtained through the hand-picking method. The seagrass composition on Panjang Island consisted of Enhalus acoroides, Thalassia hemprichii, Cymodocea rotundata, Syringodium isoetifolium, Halophila ovalis, and Halodule uninervis. The highest density and coverage of seagrass at Station 3 was not accompanied by high macrozoobenthos abundance. The highest abundance of macrozoobenthos was found at Station 2. A total of 64 macrozoobenthos species were identified, belonging to the classes Gastropoda, Malacostraca, Bivalvia, Holothuroidea, and Ophiuroidea. The macrozoobenthos community exhibited moderate to high diversity with an even distribution of individuals among species, and no single species showed dominance. At Station 1, an association was found between the seagrass T. hemprichii and the macrozoobenthos P. ocellata. The association at Station 3 involved macrozoobenthos such as Canarium urceus, Pyrene punctata, Holothuria sp., Vasticardium angulatum, Gutturnium muricinum, Umbonium sp., Phasianella solida, Canarium labiatum, Chicoreus brunneus, and Conus Aristophanes, and the seagrass species seagrass H. ovalis, S. isoetifolium, and H. uninervis.
