      Abstract

This study aimed to analyze hydroponic Japanese melon cultivation and describe the educational outcomes through the Akaruku Participatory Education Model (MEPA) for visitors, farmers, and surrounding residents. The research was conducted at Akaruku Hydrofarm using a mixed methods approach. Quantitative data were obtained from growth, yield, and growing environment variables, while qualitative data were collected through pretests, posttests, questionnaires, and interviews involving three respondent groups. MEPA is a participatory education approach that integrates hands-on hydroponic practice, technical explanation, discussion, and mentoring to improve community understanding of agricultural technology. The results showed an average plant height of 167 cm, stem diameter of 10.18 mm, and yield of 1.58 kg per plant. Regression analysis indicated that plant height and nutrient solution pH influenced yield with a coefficient of determination of 0.78. Pretest–posttest results indicate an increase in respondents’ understanding after the educational activity, with the average improvement in understanding reaching 28.68%. This study concludes that hydroponic Japanese melon cultivation at Akaruku Hydrofarm supports plant growth and production and provides positive educational outcomes for visitors, farmers, and surrounding residents as targets of hydroponic technology extension.
