This study evaluated the effect of sorbitol–citric acid (SorCA) modification and varying concentrations of phenol formaldehyde (PF) adhesive on the physical and mechanical properties of rattan husk particleboard. SorCA was applied at concentrations of 0 %, 20 %, and 40 %, while PF was applied at 10 % and 14 %. The results showed that most of the board properties met SNI 03-2105-2006 and JIS A 5908:2003 standards. A 40 % SorCA concentration provided the best dimensional stability through low thickness swelling values. However, SorCA modification did not improve the overall physical and mechanical properties. Untreated particleboard showed the best mechanical performance (MOE, MOR, IB, and SBT). The ineffectiveness of the modification was suspected to be caused by the incompatibility of the bond between the PF adhesive and the rattan husk particles that had undergone chemical changes due to SorCA esterification, thus weakening the internal bonding quality of the board. Thus, the application of SorCA on rattan skin is not optimal for improving the quality of particle board.
