      Abstract

The role of horses has transitioned from a mode of transportation to a sport animal. Helminthiasis remains a significant health challenge and can result in considerable economic losses for stable owners. This study aimed to count the prevalence and identify risk factors associated with gastrointestinal nematode infections in sport horses in Ciampea District. A cross-sectional study design was employed, utilizing two main data sources: laboratory examination results (simple flotation and McMaster methods) and questionnaire data obtained from stable owners. Examination of 28 fecal samples revealed a total prevalence of 89.2%, comprising strongyle prevalence of 82.1% and ascarid prevalence of 7.1%. Risk factors demonstrating significant correlation with helminthiasis included age, sex, grazing habits, and daily bathing frequency. The intensity of strongyle and ascarid infections was classified as moderate, with mean egg counts per gram of feces of 510.87 ± 455.26 and 350.00 ± 212.13, respectively.
