      Abstract

The in sacco method is often used to assess feed degradation, but the results can be influenced by different flow rates (Kp) due to the composition of the feed given. In addition, in sacco Effective Degradability (ED) calculations still use Kp assumptions that have not been verified under tropical conditions. This study aims to evaluate the effect of forage and concentrate balance in dairy cows on feed degradability using the in sacco method and compare it with the in vitro gas test method as a more stable standard. The study used three feed balance treatments (P1 = 60% forage + 40% concentrate, P2 = 50% forage + 50% concentrate, P3 = 40% forage + 60% concentrate) on Friesian Holstein (FH) dairy cows with fistulas. The results showed that total dry matter intake did not differ significantly between treatments (P>0.05), but the treatment affected forage intake, concentrate intake, and significantly (P<0.05) affected flow rate. Corn had the highest degradation, elephant grass had the lowest, and the ration was between the two. The highest in sacco ED value was in P1 and decreased as the concentrate in the ration increased because the faster flow rate limited the fermentation time in the rumen. The in vitro gas test method produced a more stable kinetic pattern between treatments without the influence of flow rate, so it can be used as a comparison. The correlation between the two methods showed that P2 provided the most consistent results (positive relationship), so P2 can be used as the basal ration for livestock in studies using the in sacco method.
