      Abstract

Cadmium is a highly toxic heavy metal that poses serious risks to the environment and health. Electrochemical remediation techniques can be an alternative solution to reduce heavy metal levels in contaminated soil. The study aimed to design a prototype electrochemical reactor and test its performance in reducing heavy metals in contaminated soil. The reactor was designed with three compartments, using copper electrodes and water as the electrolyte. The prototype performance results showed an increase during remediation from 237.44 mg/kg on the first day to 382.83 mg/kg on the seventh day. This failure was influenced by extreme pH fluctuations that triggered the formation of Cd(OH)2 deposits near the cathode. It concluded that research on electrochemical remediation techniques has not been optimal in reducing Cd contamination and requires pH control and selecting more appropriate electrode materials. Improvements are needed through pH control and selecting more appropriate electrodes and electrolytes to implement the technology more effectively.
