      Abstract

Styrofoam is a polystyrene plastic widely used as food packaging because it is practical and economical; however, it contains benzene, which is carcinogenic, and pollutes the environment, especially when used continuously. Conventional styrofoam users require an environmentally friendly alternative in the form of biofoam made from natural biopolymers such as starch and cellulose. Carrageenan waste and rice husks are potential cellulose sources for biofoam production. The development of biofoam is carried out through a copolymerization reaction supported by thermopressing technology, involving four stages: material characterization, biofoam production, biofoam characterization, and determination of the optimal formulation. This study used different ratios of carrageenan waste and rice husks to determine the best parameters through a series of tests. The results showed that formulation D (ratio 2:1) demonstrated the most balanced performance, with a thickness of 3.14±0.01 mm, the highest compressive strength of 3.27±0.11 MPa, and a satisfactory contact angle index of 114.49±0.24°. The biofoam was also able to completely degrade within 60 days.
