      Abstract

Poultry farming is an essential sector in animal food production; however, this activity generates ammonia emissions from feces and urine, which can pollute the air and pose health risks to both humans and livestock. This study aims to design a simple Biotrickling Filter to reduce ammonia concentrations in poultry houses. The Biotrickling Filter was built using a 40-liter plastic drum, filled with activated charcoal, pumice, and bioball as filter media, and inoculated with nitrifying bacteria Nitrosomonas sp. and Nitrobacter sp.. Measurements were carried out at time intervals of 1, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 hours, covering parameters such as temperature, humidity, pH, and ammonia concentration. Results showed a decrease in the initial ammonia concentration before the operation of the device from 0.62 ppm to 0.07 ppm at the last measurement time. The effectiveness of the Biotrickling Filter increased consistently, starting at 30.2% in the 1st hour measurement and reaching 88.4% at the 72nd hour at the end of the test. This design has proven to be efficient and simple, and can improve air quality in the barn environment.
