      Abstract

This study explored arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in the soil of the Kendeng Lembu cocoa plantation, in the root area of cocoa plants with different shade plants, namely coconut and lamtoro. Five soil and root samples were taken per plant type, resulting in a total of 20 soil and 20 root samples. Sampling was done at a distance of 100 cm from the base of the stem and a depth of 0-30 cm for soil, and 0-20 cm for roots. The AMF exploration in cocoa and shade plants aimed to determine the number of AMF spores, the dominant type and AMF infection in plant roots. The wet filtration method was applied to observe AMF spores in the soil. 250 µm and 53 µm sieves were used to collect AMF spores from 10 g of soil samples. The root staining method from Philips and Hayman was used to observe plant root infection. Morphologically, the AMF genera found in Kendeng Lembu Plantation are Glomus and Acaulospora, with the number of Acaulospora spores being higher than Glomus. The level of AMF infection in the roots of cocoa, coconut, and lamtoro plants is categorized as low, ranging from 4-10%.
