      Abstract

The use of cassava and salak to make processed products can generate waste, which if left to rot can pollute water and soil, cause unpleasant odors, and become a breeding ground for disease. This study aims to analyze the morphological characteristics of biochar from cassava peel waste (SKG) and salak peel waste (SLK) at pyrolysis temperatures of 400, 500, and 600°C, evaluate the biological and chemical properties of soil media with the addition of cassava peel and salak peel biochar, and assess plant growth in soil media with the addition of cassava peel and salak peel biochar. The research design used was a completely randomized design with 10 treatments: SKG-400, SLK-400, C-400, SKG-500, SLK-500, C-500, SKG-600, SLK-600, C-600, and control. The parameters observed included biochar surface morphology, total soil microbial activity, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), carbon (organic C), potential P, available P from the soil-biochar mixture, and plant growth (height, number of leaves, diameter, fresh weight, and dry weight). The analysis results showed that the type of biochar had a very significant effect on organic carbon, total microbial activity, pH, and soil EC, but did not have a significant effect on available phosphorus or plant growth parameters. Biochar from salak peel yielded the best results for total microbial activity and soil EC.
