      Abstract
Arsenic was a toxic heavy metal that could be found in the environment, particularly in surface water, and was one of the main causes of environmental pollution and health problems in humans. The objective of this study was to validate a method for determining arsenic levels in surface water. The determination method referred to the American Public Health Association (APHA) 3030B, 23rd edition, 2017, with a modification in the instrumentation, using atomic fluorescence spectrometry. The validation results in this study showed that the method was valid. This was demonstrated by the linearity test, which produced a correlation coefficient (r) greater than 0.9995. The precision test resulted in a %RSD of 2.38%, which was considered valid as it met the requirement of %RSD = 0.5 CV Horwitz. The accuracy test showed a recovery percentage of 96.37%, which fell within the acceptable range of 40–120%. The detection limit was found to be 0.2839 µg/L and the quantification limit was 0.3735 µg/L. The conclusion of this study was that the method used was proven to be robust and reliable against small variations in HCl concentration as a carrier solution, thus it was considered valid and suitable for routine analysis. Keywords: arsenic, atomic fluorescence spectrometry, surface water, validation
