      Abstract

Oil palm plantations in South Papua have the potential to cause changes in habitat structure and affect reptile diversity. This study aims to assess the diversity of reptile species at various types of sites at PT Berkat Cipta Abadi, Boven Digoel Regency, and to evaluate the role of High Conservation Value (HCV) areas in reptile conservation. The method used was a Visual Encounter Survey (VES) combined with strip transects and time search, and glue traps in four habitat types: young oil palm, old oil palm, HCV, and secondary highway. A total of 163 individuals from 17 reptile species in seven families, consisting of 10 lizards, six snakes, and one crocodile. The highest diversity index was found in HCV (H’ = 1,776), while the lowest was in young oil palm (H’ = 0,608). Important species such as Morelia viridis and Crocodylus halli were only found in HCV areas. These findings emphasize the importance of active management of HCV areas as habitats for reptile conservation within oil palm plantation landscapes.
